During our first hour of this week's Our View we will welcome lawyer Steven Wells from Animal Legal Defense Fund. Steven brings to us information about two important lawsuits currently underway through the ALDF.

First:
Locally, the Seattle Woodland Park Zoo is being investigated for elephant abuse.
Chai weaves from side to side, mindlessly shifting her massive 8,550 pound body to her right foot then back to her left foot… over and over… day after day. The thirty-one-year-old Asian elephant was born in the wild in Thailand, then captured as a baby and brought to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington.
The hard-packed surface she stands on has caused chronic, extremely painful injuries to her feet and joints. She has been artificially inseminated at least fifty-seven times, and has suffered multiple miscarriages resulting in physical and psychological pain. Yet the City of Seattle uses taxpayer money to fund this institutionalized abuse.

Second:
The Animal Legal Defense Fund, along with three other animal protection groups, filed suit in federal court last week against British Petroleum (BP) for burning alive critically endangered sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. We are thrilled to announce a temporary reprieve for these turtles whose habitat has already been devastated by the Gulf oil spill.
