Touching Beauty

As most of you know I have just returned from a two week trip to Kauai. I have been blessed to have the opportunity, for several years, to visit Hawaii each year for a well deserved vacation. There are many places, beautiful and full of wonder, in our world, but few have offered me the inspiration and sense of wonder that I feel when visiting the islands. I am reminded of the importance of touching base with places that fill us, refill us, with the beauty of nature. For some this occurs when hiking in the wilderness, for others, it may be scaling a snow covered mountain, or simply being outdoors.
I shifted, completely, as I boarded our flight from Seattle to Honolulu, reacting immediately to the melodic sounds of Hawaiian music playing on the plane as we boarded. For two amazing weeks I allowed myself to function in a much lower gear, opening my heart to the energy that comprises everything about the Hawaiian islands. I knew, as we packed to leave, I would miss the slower pace and the Aloha way that residents practice daily.
Returning home, while always offering comfort in familiarity, felt strange, as though some part of me refused to come along. I will embrace the gift of my time away, remembering the grace and beauty that Kauai and her people gave me and my daughters. I will continue to live by the Aloha spirit, hopefully carrying the gifts of Hawaii into my daily encounters back here in Seattle.
